GEORGE RODRIGUEZ
DIRECTOR - LAVA MELROSE

George Rodriguez enters his ninth season as a Cal State L.A. assistant
coach and 13th season overall as a collegiate volleyball coach.
Rodriguez originally came to CSLA in 1990 as an assistant, spending six
seasons (1990-95) with the Golden Eagles before moving to Cal Poly
Pomona as an assistant. He returned to Cal State L.A. for the 2000
season.

In each of Rodriguez’s last five seasons at CSLA, the Golden Eagles
have earned NCAA Tournament berths, including a fourth-place
national finish in 1992 and a third-place finish in 2005.
Rodriguez’s coaching experience also includes tenures at Salesian, San
Gabriel Mission, Marlborough School, Mayfield, Flintridge Prep
Glendale Community College and East L.A. College. His Salesian teams
earned league titles in five of his six seasons. In 1987 and 1988 directed
the Flintridge Prep Boys’ Volleyball team to a back-to-back league
championship.

He was the director and owner of the Top Gun Volleyball
Club. George also was the Women’s Head Volleyball Coach at East Los
Angeles College. Before arriving there, the volleyball team’s had a
record of 6 wins and 143 losses in a 10-year span. In his 5th season
George won more than 55 matches. Many already consider him the
winningest coach in school history.

He is currently the boys’ and girls’ Varsity Head Coach at Campbell Hall. In the summer of 2005 George was the assistant volleyball coach in a movie called: All You’ve Got Produced by MTV. He also recruited the girls for that movie. As of November 3rd, 2008 George was named the new Head Coach at USC Women’s Volleyball Club team.

In 2010 Campbell Hall Girls’ team won CIF SS Championship and finishing 4th in the state. Coaching the Campbell Hall Boys Volleyball Team, he has won 3 League titles and in 2012 went to the State Finals. In 2022 George was named the Head Volleyball Coach at Los Angeles City College.

LAVA Melrose houses a number of programs and program types under its banner, in addition to our club travel teams. Here is a list of all programs offered at LAVA Melrose:

# - National Travel Teams . . . We offer club volleyball travel teams for 6th-12th grade girls that compete both regionally in Southern California and nationally at competitive events across the country. Tryouts are in summer/fall and the season traditionally runs Nov-June.

# - Regional Travel Teams . . . We offer club volleyball travel teams for 4th-12th grade girls that only compete regionally in Southern California. Tryouts are in summer/fall and the season traditionally runs Nov-June, although for some teams (especially younger age group teams) the season can be shorter by several weeks or months.

# - Local Play Teams . . . We offer club teams for 3rd-10th grade girls that compete at a more localized level, not traveling very far from their home location and/or within the LAVA affiliate network itself. Tryouts are in fall and the season could begin as early as November and run as late as May; season length is on a team-by-team basis.

# - Youth Lite Program . . . The Youth Lite Program at LAVA Melrose is an immensely popular offering for 3rd-5th grade girls to learn the sport of volleyball in a fun, friendly, instructive manner. Sessions are seasonal and run for multiple weeks at a time.

# - Juniors Non-Travel Program . . . The Juniors Program at LAVA Melrose is an excellent option for 6th-8th graders who are not ready for a full commitment to club volleyball, but who want to keep their skills up for school volleyball or out of love for the game, or both! It is a non-travel program, sessions are seasonal and run for multiple weeks at a time.

YOUTH LITE PROGRAM @ LAVA MELROSE

The Youth Lite Program at LAVA has been popular and successful for several years. The program is seasonal -- Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall -- with each session running for multiple weeks. The cost per player for each session depends upon the length of the session (customarily ranges from $80-$160 per player).

The Lite Program is the official youth training and development program of LAVA Melrose, designed to give young athletes a taste of volleyball in a encouraging environment that mixes quality skills training with lots of fun games to build a passion for this wonderful sport. The program is coached by professional, paid coaches; it is not volunteer-based and, as such, the training value and player growth is significant.

The Lite Program is primarily for 3rd-5th graders, although 2nd graders or 6th graders can participate with Director approval on a case-by-case basis depending on available space and the time of year. The program usually runs on two courts, a Beginner/Intermediate Court for newer players and an Advanced Court for experienced youth athletes.

JUNIORS NON-TRAVEL PROGRAM @ LAVA MELROSE
FOR 6TH-8TH GRADE GIRLS

The Juniors Program at LAVA has been a strong training program for middle school athletes for several years. The program is seasonal -- Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall -- with each session running for multiple weeks. The cost per player for each session depends upon the length of the session (customarily ranges from $80-$160 per player).

The Juniors Program is the official middle school non-travel training program of LAVA Melrose, designed to provide quality technical training with focus on individual development (skills training and having fun). The program is for girls who are not looking to play on a travel club volleyball team, but who wish to keep their skills up either out of love for the game or a desire to play in high school, or both! It limits both the cost and time commitment required to participate, but still provides excellent training at the hands of professional, paid coaches; it is not volunteer-based and, as such, the training value and player growth is significant.

The Juniors Program is primarily for 6th-8th graders, although 9th graders can participate with Director approval on a case-by-case basis depending on available space and the time of year. 6th graders are encouraged to participate in Juniors instead of the Lite during winter or spring sessions, and the Lite in summer or fall. The program usually runs on two courts, a Beginner/Intermediate Court for newer players and an Advanced Court for experienced juniors athletes.
